Ancient stereotypes are preconceived notions that people of a certain culture all share the same traits or characteristics. Many ancient stereotypes are negative and are used to develop a negative view of a race or culture. In a few instances there are some positive stereotypes that present a group of people in a good light.

The Jewish People

The Jewish People are an old race. Throughout time there have been ancient stereotypes regarding this culture. Starting with the death of Jesus Christ, other races have blamed the Jews for many of the mistakes made throughout history. With the help of Shakespeare's Jewish Usurer, Shylock, Jews are believed to be miserly, stingy and care only about money. In a positive light the Jewish people have, throughout history, been considered very hard workers of high intellect.
The Arab People

The Arab people of today earned their stereotypes from interaction with western civilization. Most of these ancient stereotypes were do the vast difference between the Arab people and the European culture. Religious Muslim fanaticism is a typical belief. All Middle Eastern cultures are determined to kill as many infidels as possible. We also think of all Arabs as riding camels through the desert, smoking water pipes, and treating their women as property.

The Native American People

When the white man came to shores of the Americas the native peoples were looked on as noble and strong because they were able to survive in such a hostile environment. While this view of the anoble savagea exists today there are plenty of negative ancient stereotypes that have developed over the ages. Smoking peace pipes, wearing feathered headdresses, scalping their enemies and dancing around totem poles are all stereotypes that have grown throughout time.

Gypsies

Gypsies are another culture of people that have gathered their share of stereotypes over time. They are thought to be nomadic thieves stealing horses, children, and valuables. All their women are dancers and fortunetellers with necklaces and bracelets made of ancient coins and gemstones. At the same time they are noted for their lovely metal work and exceptional cooking skills.
