I'm curious on this, as I went to King Richard's Faire yesterday and bought one because I think they look cool. Just wondering if they have some meaning when worn on the back of your costume.
People in the renaissance wore them as a sign of status because fox hunting was something that the rich did.
As for meaning today, I don't think there is anything. Probably just people being stupid and thinking you were supposed to wear them like you have an actual tail. Who knows?

Actually, today people wear them as a sign of relationship status. Wearing it on a certain side means that you’re either single and looking or in a relationship, and wearing it down the middle means that you swing both ways and/or you’re looking for sex. I don’t remember which side means which though.
