Costumes For Women That Are Easy To Create

Costume parties are a great opportunity for us to dress up and become someone else for an evening. Selecting a costume that will feature your new persona can take a little bit of thought in an effort to discover what will work best for you. It may be fun to become someone or something different for the night, what about a flapper gal, a nun or even a belly dance costume for the evening?

Flapper Gal, Nun And

With these selections, a simple costume can be created. First, it may be a good idea to check out the local hobby or craft store. Finding some patterns for costumes can give the consumer a better idea of what might be needed for the costume. If sewing is something that you can do, you will have everything you need to create the perfect flapper gal, nun or belly dance costume.

The flapper gal is of course the roaring twenties girl. Usually, the costume for the flapper gal is a short and straight dress that is not too tight. Long beaded necklaces are generally added as an accessory to give the costume more flair. Place a narrow headband around the head and don't forget to add some long gloves. The flapper gal costume is fairly easy to make and can be quickly put together.

The belly dance costume, may involve a little more creativity. Finding a pattern to follow is probably the best choice. The top of a belly dance costume is like a bra. This needs to be decorated, possibly with sequins. A small vest is an option that can be worn over the bra if you want to tone your costume down a little bit. The skirt needs to be below the belly button and there should be several layers of thin and sheer skirts in order for the skirt to be flowing. Like the flapper gal costume, the belly dance costume can be accessorized with a headband across the forehead and a scarf is usually worn to cover the lower part of the face.

The nun costume may possibly be the easiest to put together of those mentioned. A one piece tunic is needed, and it should be made of a black material. Black material with white across the front is used for the head covering. Make sure that the head covering is large enough to cover all of the hair. Again, a store that carries patterns will have a picture of this simple costume to give a demonstration of the look that needs to be achieved.

Making your own costume for a party can really showcase your own personality. The flapper gal, belly dance and the nun costumes are all fun to wear and fairly simple to re-create. The costumes themselves are usually very comfortable and can be saved and worn again.

Hippie Headbands: A Hippie Fashion Trend

The 1960s gave rise to a hippie subculture which was originally a youth movement throughout the US. Not only did it spread to other countries, but it has had resurgence in recent years for young and old alike. Such shows as That 70s Show are no doubt partially responsible, but the fashion industry has taken note, and we are seeing hippie headbands, and fashion everywhere these days.

Both men and women in the hippie movement wore jeans and maintained long hair, wore sandals or went barefoot. Men frequently grew beards and women refused to wear makeup and bras. They wore brightly colored clothes in unusual styles which included bell bottom jeans, vests, tie dyed clothes, dashikis, peasant skirts and blouses, and those famous hippie headbands which they adopted from the Native Americans. Additionally they adopted styles from Asian, Indian, African and Latin American cultures.

Hippies were known for wearing handmade clothing because their beliefs included defying corporate culture. Because of this they not only learned to make clothes; they bought them from flea markets and second hand shops.

Many may not know that the hippie scene actually rose from the beatnik scene of the 1950s. The ideologies were originally the same as well as the values.

Hippie fashions and values completely changed our culture, influencing music, television, literature and the arts as well as morals and religious beliefs. As you might imagine, tons of hippie clothes, ideals and other aspects of hippie culture have become part of our mainstream culture today. From church movements to cultural diversity, the concepts have been accepted more and more over the last several decades.

The hippie music festivals is only one of the many celebratory ways we embrace the effects of the hippie culture in modern times.

At these festivals hippie symbols and iconography are everywhere including the peace sign which can be seen on peace clothing, tie dye clothing, hippie jewelry, other forms of hippie fashion, and even the occasional peace sign tattoos.

Girls are known to wear gypsy skirts, which are peasant skirts, or broomstick skirts, often tie dyed and hippie dresses of similar fashion. Hippie tapestries are often draped or cut and sewn into dashikis or dresses as well.

In particular there were a myriad designs of hippie headbands. These bohemian headbands were often braided out of leather or fabric of most any type. The chic headbands of the 1980s were a throwback to them, but the 60s headbands were not typically elastic like those of the 1980s. The fashion trend included the use of bandanas or a simple cord tied around the head in various styles. These boho headband accessories didnt have to match an outfit in particular, and therefore often had personal meaning or were worn as either a statement or to commemorate something in many instances.

The sight of the hippie headband was a sure sign in the 60s that a hippie was in your presence. This often brought derision from those who withstood the morals of the hippie movement. Their hippie clothes and head wraps were then seen as the costumes of foolish youngsters. Now people want to know where they can find a hippie store!

The hippie bands at the festivals wear clothes and headbands often made more modern with some type of new fashion flair. The popular piercings add a new twist to the hippie look, as well as dreadlocks often sported by neo-hippies these days.

Fashion changes, but hippie headbands, fashion, clothes and music are here to stay!

How to Make your Own Sexy Costume For Halloween

If you want a sexy costume to wear for Halloween, you are in luck! You can actually create your own with a little time and a little creativity. Creating a sexy costume could be as easy as wearing a bombshell dress, or as complicated as following a pattern to build your own unique costume.

Here are some easy costume ideas that you can make on your own:

  • Angel- White dress, white heels, white pantyhose and some makeshift wings using wire and sheer fabric
  • Stripper/Exotic Dancer- Extremely high heels, a tight, short dress and props if you have any
  • Naughty School Girl- Plain white, buttoned down shirt to show your cleavage, short plaid skirt, black shoes with ankle socks; carry a lollipop
  • Sexy Secretary- Form fitting skirt suit without a blouse underneath, thigh highs with a garter showing, pair of glasses, pencil and a legal pad
  • Naughty Nurse- White pencil skirt and a fitted white shirt belted, white heels, white pantyhose, stethoscope, rubber gloves, hair pulled loosely back
  • Dirty Cop- Navy pencil skirt with a lighter blue button up shirt opened to the point where your cleavage is showing, thigh high stockings, handcuffs and a badge. You could finish off your look with some sexy, bomber sunglasses.
  • Devil- Anything black or red outfit that is fitted, face make up, horns and a tail pinned on and you are ready to go...spice up this outfit with fake red eyelashes, other makeup accents and red glitter.
  • Playboy Bunny- A fitted white or pink leotard and stockings, a cotton ball tail pinned on, bunny ears....you can have fun with this outfit, but those are the basic essentials!!
  • Sexy Vampire- To create a sexy vampire outfit, the most important prop you will need is a set of vampire teeth, which you can pick up for just a few dollars at virtually any costume store. Goth clothing works perfectly for this type of costume. Or, if you want to sex the outfit up a few notches, wear a tight, short black dress and add the teeth. You can add some lace to the outfit and add a feather duster for added effect.
  • Sexy French Maid- For this, you need a white tank top, short black skirt and a white apron.
  • Pageant Queen- If you have a knock out formal gown lying around, you can easily be a pageant queen winner. All you need to create this costume is a tiara and a sash. You can either buy the sash at a costume store, or if you can sew, you can make it yourself. If you want to be super sexy, wear a bikini with the sash as if you were competing in the swimsuit portion of the competition.

Many of these sexy Halloween costumes can be created on your own on a shoestring budget. Have fun with what you are creating, and ensure that you add props and make up to complete the look.

how do i make a with stuff around the houes?
i want to have a gypsy costume on hand just in case and i want to know how to make one with stuff from around the house. normal clothing and other ideas are so welcome!!!!!!!! Thanks

    • ANSWER:
First you need a long flowing skirt. The more colorful the better, I think. If you don't already have one, you could borrow one or look through thrift stores for something funky. In thrift stores like Salvation Army you could also get as many colorful scarves as you can. Tie one around your head and several around your waist and wrists. You can also get some crazy jewelry too and wear your makeup really thick. Have fun!

  2. QUESTION:
How to make a cute Gypsy costume.?
So for halloween this year I want to be a Gypsy.
I know that this is a fairly easy costume to make...
I need some suggestions on how to create one by using no money.

    • ANSWER:
well if you have a sort of flowy skirt (colorful would be best but black would work too) that's made with that crinkly fabric you could definitely use that. next you'll need a loose quarter sleeve blouse or shirt and you'll NEED to get a vest of some kind, preferably one with sequins. You'll need a lot of colorful bangles and bracelets and necklaces and if you have your ears pierced some big colorful earrings. Wear your hair down and fairly curly and wrap a colorful scarf around your head and tie it so some of the scarf hangs down. some gold flats, sandals, or gladiator sandals will complete the look. and for the makeup you could do a smokey eye with some bright red lipstick.

    - PS, We are not trick or treating, we are going to a huge "party".

    • ANSWER:
You might have to raid your mom's closet for this one. I would start off with a white, puffy blouse and find a chunky brown belt. Also, find a funky scarf to wrap around your waist like in the picture. To make the look younger, I think you should find short, cute "gypsy" like skirts. You could maybe wear your Uggs for shoes. For the final touch, big gold . If you can't find any of this at your hosue you can always go shopping at Target of Forever21. OR (sorry :) you could just get a bohemian blouse, jeans, and a funky scarf. That might be easiest. OR a dress. Have fun! :)

Halloween Gypsy Costumes

Gypsy Or Pirate Costume For Kids And Adults

One of my wife's favorite costumes as a little girl was a gypsy, or . Not only did she dress up as a gypsy for Halloween, but just as dress up playtime too. She says that she liked this kind of costume because it was mysterious and a little 'bad'. Hmmm... maybe I should see if she's still got that costume! I'll get my pirate costume out too!

From all outward appearances, a looks like a lot of work to create. But it's really pretty easy. I'll outline a couple ways to easily put together this costume below.

Back when we were kids, there just weren't a lot of costumes that they sold at the stores. Our parents had to make them, or we had to come up with them ourselves. There's a big part of me that misses this - it makes kids become a little more creative, and the times I spent with my Mom putting together a goofy costume stick in my memory as pretty great times. So putting together a gypsy costume should be a time that Mom spends with her daughtet. Even those really busy families can find all the necessary parts to put together a great gypsy costume.

So where do gypsy costumes and dress originate?

Gypsies came originally from the people who lived in Romania. They were called Roma or Romani and were comprised of nomadic tribes that wandered much of the European countries during the Middle Ages and often lived in caravans. Incredibly, there are still gypsies in the world today.

Originally, gypsies dressed very differently than the rest of the population. In the 1400's and 1500's, women dressed in a robe gathered at the neck. It was worn over a chemise gown. Generally, the women also wore a long cloth that fell down the back, then wrapped around the waist back up the front and tied at the shoulder. They often also wore a turban on their head.

Later, as the culture experienced and intermixed with other cultures and other peoples, they began to dress differently. The gypsies began dressing much like the peasants of the lands they traveled to. They began wearing laced vests and full flounced skirts. These were the fashions that the peasants wore during the Renaissance period.

Easy ways to make Gypsy costumes

So here is where it gets fun for Mom and daughter. To put together a gypsy or fortune teller costume you have to do a little bit of shopping around at the used clothing stores, and you'll have to dust off that sewing machine. The following suggestions can be tailored for either girls or boys, and can be made easily once you've gathered all the right parts.

First outfit - Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Costume

What you'll need:

A Long tired skirt in a vibrant color - preferrably one color, not a pattern.

The Seinfeld "Pirate Shirt" if you remember that famous episode - puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist

Bright front-laced vest

Black leotard stockings

Black shoes - not dress shoes, comfortable shoes

Colored sash for the waist - bright solid color or pattern

Matching bandana for hair

Large gold hoop earrings, colorful beaded necklaces and bangles for arms

Second outfit - Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit

Long wide-flowing black skirt

White shirt like above

Black front-laced vest

Black leotard stockings

Black shoes

Bright apron or a shorter overskirt

Black wig with long, ringlets or curls

Colored wide headband

Large gold hoop earrings, colorful beaded necklaces and bangles for arms

Men or Boys Gypsy or Pirate Costume

Black or brown pants

Black boots

White pirate shirt (remember the 70's? You should have saved that shirt!)

Long black or brown vest. Trim this with gold-colored braiding using the sewing machine of a hot-glue gun.

Colorful scarf to use as a sash at the waist. I like red, but bright purple (royal color) or gold works well too.

Colorful bandana

One gold hoop earring. Unless you or your child has a pierced ear, shoot for a clip-on here.

Here's the important part here. Just let your imagination run wild. Mix and Match . Dress in plain whites and blacks for the shirts, pants and occasionally the skirts. Remember that gypsies were very poor and that bright fabrics were very expensive - certainly not like today. So most of what they wore were plain splashed with bright colors. Large bangles and earrings will fill out the outfit. Again, use your imagination.

    • ANSWER:
For makeup do it pretty dramatic and bold colors that go along with your costume. Than you could string little bells in your hair so that when you move your hair makes noise and it be little things of silver so it would look really pretty. I don't think a petticoat is a good idea since it might make it look too thick. If you get what I am saying. You could also put some glitter in your hair to make it pretty looking.
      Good LUck and Happy Halloween!!

Anyone know how to make a really good gypsy costume for Halloween ?

    • ANSWER:
well you could use things that you probably already have. my friend was a gypsy in jail for a haunted hayride we were part of, i was a crazy/innocent little girl =]
well her costume was a long flowy skirt, that happened to be pink, whatever color will work tho. also she had a um i guess you could call it a scarf and wrapped it around her like a belt but let some side hang down. she had a headband on and her hair all messed up, she used hairspray and w/e would make her hair stay like that, lol her hair actually looked good. she wore boots but that might just have been cuz it was cold. you could wear a solid colored shirt maybe torn up a bit and have huge bead necklaces
hope i helped, and have fun
      ~Adela

  5. QUESTION:
Should I be the Queen of Hearts, Alice, or a Gypsy for Halloween? Any tips on accessories and makeup?
I know Halloween is a while away, but I've come down to three different Halloween costume choices:
    The Queen of Hearts

    http://www.partycity.com/product/tween+queen+of+hearts+costume.do

Alice (From Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland)

    http://www.partycity.com/product/adult+alice+costume+deluxe+-+tim+burton%27s+alice+in+wonderland.do?sortby=ourPicks&pp=60&size=all&navSet=178780

    or a Gypsy

    http://www.partycity.com/product/teen+girls+crystal+ball+gypsy+costume.do?sortby=ourPicks&pp=60&size=all&navSet=170274

I wasn't sure which to choose. I'm really leaning towards all three, so it's hard to choose just one. I figured if I was the Queen of Hearts I could use some red hair coloring that I have from last Halloween to put red streaks in my hair. I'm not sure about makeup and accessories for the costumes, so tips are appreciated. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Well, because Tim Burton's Alice movie came out last year, and the costume price is dollars, I would try it, but I think that other girls who are AIW fans with limited budgets will be thinking the same thing. Still, that dress could be worn for Easter and for school dances and weddings and etc., so I'd suggest Alice. If they are out of Alice costumes, go for the Queen of Hearts. That Gypsy costume will be there next year. Make sure if you get the Alice costume to try and get the wig too! Have fun!

I'm going to a renaissance faire tomorrow morning and while I'm going to look for my old white peasant top tomorrow morning, I need to know what I should wear instead if I can't find it. The only loose type of top I have is a grey, plain, very loose short sleeved shirt. Other than that, all I have is t-shirts or tank tops.......

    • ANSWER:
anything loose velvet or tie die could work
pair it with a maxi skirt
gypsys generally have loose flowing clothing perhaps you could wear a long cardigan with a suitable top?

  4. QUESTION:
Where can I find cheap Renaissance costumes?
Where can I find cheap, but good Renaissance costumes? I know they are expensive, but anything that is cheaper. Or at least a semi cheap bodice. The clothes don't have to be all renaissance, but something medieval themed. They can be a peasant, gypsie or whatever outfit but I would prefer one that includes a nice dress (something like a princess outfit). This is for a renaissance fair... so something in that genre I would appreciate.

Or, do you have any ideas on how to build a cheap renaissance faire costume that is for a princess (nothing that shows the stomach because I heard you get made fun of if you dress like a witch or or gypsy).

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I have the same problem, heres how I fixed it.

      1. THRIFT - For the last 2 years, I've been thrifting most of my costumes. I ask friends if they have fake corsets (they were popular in the 90s?) and I search old stores to see if they have anything. I've found something without fail.

      2. Stores - They sell really cheaply made stuff. But the good part is, some of their costumes have nice, fake velvet under/over dresses that can be used to make a nice-looking princess dress.

      3. Dont be afraid to splurge - If you know you'll wear it for the next 4+ years, then spend the 0 on a really nice costume. Chances are, you'll be glad (like I was) because you'll wear it for years to come, and you can laugh at the people AT the faire spending 0 on the same thing.

Ebay is always a good one, I've also found great things at some of the websites listed.

      -
Also, where did you hear people get made fun of if they dress like a Gypsy or Bellydancer? Im apart of the Bellydancing group that does the Faire in my City, and no one EVER gets made fun of. They get hit on a lot by the cute men, though. ;)

Gypsy Costume For Girls

January 11, 2011

gypsy girl saw this girl everywhere cute costume

Gypsy or Pirate Costume for Kids and Adults

One of my wife's favorite costumes as a little girl was a gypsy, or fortune teller. Not only did she dress up as a gypsy for Halloween, but just as dress up playtime too. She says that she liked this kind of costume because it was mysterious and a little 'bad'. Hmmm... maybe I should see if she's still got that costume! I'll get my pirate costume out too! From all outward appearances, a gypsy costume looks like a lot of work to create. Easy ways to make Gypsy costumes So here is where it gets fun for Mom and daughter. To put together a gypsy or fortune teller costume you have to do a little bit of shopping around at the used clothing stores, and you'll have to dust off that sewing machine. The following suggestions can be tailored for either girls or boys, and can be made easily once you've gathered all the right parts. First outfit - Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Costume What you'll need: A Long tired skirt in a vibrant color - preferrably one color, not a pattern. The Seinfeld "Pirate Shirt" if you remember that famous episode - puffy sleeves gathered at the wrist Bright front-laced vest Black leotard stockings Black shoes - not dress shoes, comfortable shoes Colored sash for the waist - bright solid color or pattern Matching bandana for hair Large gold hoop earrings, colorful beaded necklaces and bangles for arms Second outfit - Women/Girl's Fortune Teller/Gypsy Outfit Long wide-flowing black skirt White shirt like above Black front-laced vest Black leotard stockings Black shoes Bright apron or a shorter overskirt Black wig with long, ringlets or curls Colored wide headband Large gold hoop earrings, colorful beaded necklaces and bangles for arms Men or Boys Gypsy or Pirate Costume Black or brown pants Black boots White pirate shirt (remember the 70's? You should have saved that shirt!) Long black or brown vest. Trim this with gold-colored braiding using the sewing machine of a hot-glue gun. Colorful scarf to use as a sash at the waist. I like red, but bright purple (royal color) or gold works well too. Colorful bandana One gold hoop earring. Unless you or your child has a pierced ear, shoot for a clip-on here. Here's the important part here. Just let your imagination run wild. Mix and Match bright colors. Again, use your imagination.About the author Scott Taylor is a noted author and prolific writer of many resources such as Party Ideas, Herbal Remedies, and Family Investing. Gypsy Costumes Homemade

7 Homemade Kids Ideas

When it comes to , we always decided to make our own because we felt it was foolish to spend $35 and up, for a costume that our child was only going to wear one time. Over the years, my sister-in-law and I have made numerous costumes for our children and I thought I would share a few simple ideas with you.

If you are concerned about safety, I recommend purchasing some reflective material patches at your local fabric and crafts store, and sew or glue them onto your child's costume. This safety measure will help car drivers to see them at night as they are crossing the street. I always recommend that a responsible adult accompany children on Trick or Treat night.

Here are the Halloween costume ideas we came up with over the years.

Lady Bug - You will need: red leotard, red tights, 4 sheets of black felt and fabric glue. Cut out some circles and ovals from the felt and glue onto the red leotard so that it looks like lady bug spots. To make antennae, purchase a black headband, 2 round 3" diameter Styrofoam balls, 2 pencils, black acrylic paint and gorilla glue. Paint the Styrofoam balls and pencils black and let dry. Glue pencils to the center of the Styrofoam balls, let dry and then glue the pencils to the top of the head band.

Note: You could use the same concept above and do a bumble bee and substitute the red clothing items with yellow clothing items and make black felt bee-style stripes.
Construction Worker - You will need: denim blue jeans, white T-shirt, flannel shirt and a yellow plastic hard hat found at a discount toy store. You can borrow a man's tool belt or purchase a canvas-style apron with pockets at a local craft store for a few dollars. If desired, visit your local dollar discount store and purchase a plastic tool set to stick into the pockets of the tool belt.

Golfer - You will need: khaki colored pants, polo-style shirt and a plaid golfers cap. You can purchase plastic golf clubs and balls at your local dollar discount store. We made our own golf bag by emptying out a large round cardboard tube and painting it with acrylic paints. Punch a hole in each side of the tube and attach twine for a carrying strap. You can fit 3-4 plastic golf clubs into the holder and have your child carry it over their shoulder.

Nurse - You will need: white skirt, shirt, tights and shoes which your child most likely already has in her closet. To add to that, purchase a child's size nurses cap at a costume store along with a plastic doctor's kit at your local dollar discount store. We also accented the white shirt with a name badge and a red felt first-aid cross that we hand drew and safety pinned to the shirt.

Mummy - You will need: white clothing, white ski mask, white sneakers, several rolls of white first aid bandages and numerous safety pins. We cut the bandages into 12-24" lengths and safety pinned them around the legs, arms and abdomen of the outfit. We chose to use fabric glue to attach them to the white ski mask. If you are making this costume for a small child, then I recommend using non-toxic fabric glue instead of the safety pins.

Black Spider - You will need: black jeans, black sweatshirt, 2 pairs of black little girls tights, 1 bag of fiberfill stuffing, black thread. You need to cut the panty portion off of the tights and just use the legs. Stuff each leg firmly with fiberfill and then sew the end shut with thread. Do this for a total of 4 spider legs. You will want to hand sew (or machine sew) the stuffed legs onto the sides of the black sweatshirt about 4-5" below the sweatshirt arm. If desired, you can paint the child's face black or lime green with face paints.

Crayon - You will need: your choice of colored clothing, we selected orange to fit with the Halloween theme, along with several sheets of black felt, fabric glue and a black fabric paint. Grab one of your child's crayons and use it as an example on how you should cut out designs from your black felt. Attach those designs onto the clothing items so that it resembles a crayon. You can use the black fabric paint to paint on the crayon-makers name on the front of the shirt. To further fit with our theme, we machine sewn a triangular hat out of matching orange felt, so that 'our' little crayon had a pointy crayon top.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
what are some good ideas for a homemade ?
im doing a gypsy for halloween and i need some ideas on how to make it but it has to be homemade any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
use scarves over your head, wear big gold jewelry(rings, hoop earrings, and bangles), lots of eyeshadow and lipstick. wear a full long skirt with lots of print and a belly shirt. If you don't have anything at home you can even get a lot of this stuff at the thrift stores

  2. QUESTION:
How Can You Make A Homemade Gypsy Costume?

    • ANSWER:
Sleeves that puff out, lots of layers for skirts. Skirts should be about mid calf to floor length. Bright colors but no neon and no bright red (not worn as they thought it brought bad luck) You can tie a fringed piece of triangular fabric over your skirt. Lots of gold jewelry, fake is fine, hoop earrings, you can sew some fake gold pieces onto the bottom of the skirt. Bracelets, anklets, necklaces, all gold colored if possible. Do NOT show your belly as that is from a completely different culture. You can also wear a vest.
Fabrics and patterns that don't match are GOOD, and don't be shy to add a few bits of fabric that nobles would have worn, such as a bit of velvet or gold ribbon. Try not to use printed fabrics for anything, this isn't period, you can use emroided if you can find it
For makeup, black eyeliner, red lipstick, but stay away from bright eyeshadows and stuff like that
      have fun!
