Gypsies, as they traveled across Europe for centuries, were sometimes seen as strange, exotic and sometimes dangerous people. The stories went that gypsies stole or swindled and generally operated outside the law. They were a bit frightening, so dressing as one was the perfect costume.

Creating a gypsy costume or a fortune teller costume can be real fun.

Gypsies were earlier referred to as Roma and were constituted of members of loose nomadic who wandered through Europe during 15th and 16t centuries. Many lived out of caravans with a very nomadic way of life.

You can still find many gypsies across many parts of the world.

The gypsy women were garbed in simple robe with gatherings at the neck over which a chemise gown was worn.

A length of cloth tied at the shoulder ran down the back and across the opposite waist and the front of the body similar to the toga worn by Romans. Many times gypsies use a turban to adorn the head.

As time passed, the gypsies also started following fashion and dressed in the same garb as the locals of the village they passed through.

Gypsy clothing styles was heavily influenced by the cultural dress of the time.

The gypsy dress was gradually modified into laced vests and flounced skirts, which are quite popular today.

You can create your own gypsy costume at home with a little imagination, a little time and lots of shopping.

Gypsy clothing patterns are easily available online and the things you need are quite easily available.

How to act like a gypsy fortune teller?

For my final drama exam I have to be a fortune teller, but I have no idea how to act like one or talk like one. I have my costume, but other than that I'm not prepared. And it has to be over a minute. Any ideas?

1. Rent "The Wolfman" starring Lon Chaney Jr. And listen to Maria Ouspenskaya talk, especially when she recites that bit that goes "Even a man who is pure at heart, and says his prayers at night.."

2. Go to the link below on coldreading, described by magician/skeptic James Randi. It tells you how to fake being psychic.

Where can I find cheap Renaissance costumes?

Where can I find cheap, but good Renaissance costumes? I know they are expensive, but anything that is cheaper. Or at least a semi cheap bodice. The clothes don't have to be all renaissance, but something medieval themed. They can be a peasant, gypsie or whatever outfit but I would prefer one that includes a nice dress (something like a princess outfit). This is for a renaissance fair... so something in that genre I would appreciate.

Or, do you have any ideas on how to build a cheap renaissance faire costume that is for a princess (nothing that shows the stomach because I heard you get made fun of if you dress like a witch or or gypsy).

Thank you!

andre1 answers:

I have the same problem, heres how I fixed it.

1. THRIFT - For the last 2 years, I've been thrifting most of my costumes. I ask friends if they have fake corsets (they were popular in the 90s?) and I search old stores to see if they have anything. I've found something without fail.

2. Halloween Costume Stores - They sell really cheaply made stuff. But the good part is, some of their costumes have nice, fake velvet under/over dresses that can be used to make a nice-looking princess dress.

3. Dont be afraid to splurge - If you know you'll wear it for the next 4+ years, then spend the $200 on a really nice costume. Chances are, you'll be glad (like I was) because you'll wear it for years to come, and you can laugh at the people AT the faire spending $400 on the same thing.

Ebay is always a good one, I've also found great things at some of the websites listed.

-
Also, where did you hear people get made fun of if they dress like a Gypsy or Bellydancer? Im apart of the Bellydancing group that does the Faire in my City, and no one EVER gets made fun of. They get hit on a lot by the cute men, though. ;)

By the way, the skirt is a rich, velvety blue with a dark pink sash that has gold coins sewn to the bottom. The top is a white off-the-shoulder peasant blouse. Finally, the look is completed with a thick, black, 'leather' belt with gold embelishments.

What's a good hairstyle fora dead gypsy?

So, as you know, Halloween is here(:
Well, last year I was a gypsy, and instead of wasting money on another costume, I decided I would just be dead this year!
I have a problem though..I need a hairstyle that would work.
I need some ideas. Pictures, and links to videos would be a big help, just so I can see before I try.
If you must know, I have naturally straight blonde hair, and the length is even with my underarms.

Paul asks…

Help with what top to wear for a !!!?

I'm going to a renaissance faire tomorrow morning and while I'm going to look for my old white peasant top tomorrow morning, I need to know what I should wear instead if I can't find it. The only loose type of top I have is a grey, plain, very loose short sleeved shirt. Other than that, all I have is t-shirts or tank tops.......

andre1 answers:

Anything loose velvet or tie die could work
pair it with a maxi skirt
gypsys generally have loose flowing clothing perhaps you could wear a long cardigan with a suitable top?

Nancy asks…

What do you call that white gypsy shirt that puffs out?

Okay so Halloween is just a few months away, but before everything goes out of stock I'm putting together a costume. I'm gonna be a gypsy this year and I figured that I should start looking for parts. I started to do a search on stuff that I might need when I realized IDK what you call the white shirt that puffs out. Sometimes you wear a vest with it, sometimes a jacket. Helpppppppp please :)

andre1 answers:

You could refer to it as a peasant top or pirate shirt. Those would be your best bet, Both would produce the same result as a gypsy shirt as they are all the same thing but have different names due to their application.

So. Yesterday i went to a halloween party, this girl was dressed up like lady gaga, she looked really good in that costume! Anyways i was sitting down on the couch, i was buzzed from drinking some vodka, my friend was like take a picture with my friend who is a drink gypsy! And she's like the drunk part i like but she didn't say anything nice about my halloween costume; she didn't say anything at all. Why are girls like that with other girls; seriousley? I compliment her but she doesn't say anything nice towards me.

Additional Details
I was the gypsy girl and she was lady gaga.

Whats the point of being a snob towards me if ive done nothing to her, i don't even know the girl? Its a matter of respect.
Is she jealous of me or just is vain! I know that being vain is a sign of insecurity.
Well i'm not a b*tch and so that doesn't define me with being naturally.

Guys: What do yall think of a girl wearing this halloween costume?(pics included)?

http://www.buycostumes.com/Crystal-Ball-Gypsy-Teen-Costume/68864/ProductDetail.aspx

Be honest! I don't think i am gonna wear mine with tights though, because they are so annoying.. but tell me what you think.. i wanna surprise my boyfriend, so he cant know what my costume is until the night of the party!

andre1 answers:

Your choice looks really good!

Here's another thought: Surprise your boy friend by you picking out his costume for him. Tell him he's going, but won't know until that evening when he comes for you. You'll give it to him then. This way it will be a double surprise. Yeah, have him pay for his by giving you the money (in advance).

As for suggestions . . . The one I really like is the guy is an escaped convict. You can either be his girl friend (who helped him) OR his hostage. In the case of his hostage, he could play the part of guy who went in real young and has never even been on a date with a girl. You could act scared of him and other cool acting stuff.

As for his uniform, I'd recommend a two piece uniform -- either scrubs or denim -- along with slip-on sneakers. You can look at PX:Direct -- http://www.pxdirect.com for ideas or even to buy from them. Honestly, make the sneakers cheap and not expensive as inmates shouldn't have nice clothing!

As for yourself, you could be in really short shorts, t-shirt, sneakers, etc. Something that would make a boy friend or guy whose has been around girls before hot.

Anyway, its not something I've seen done, so it should be unique.

James asks…

do these sound cool to you?

I'm a teenage girl.
Gothic Angel
Mad Hatter
Glee Cheerio
pirate cutie
Shipmate cutie

andre1 answers:

If you can, just buy a cheap red dress somewhere, then add the gold at the top and some purple fabric where it's needed. If you've never made garments before, this could be a little but too difficult for a beginner. A good first try would be to make something called the infinity dress - it's very basic, and the fabric used for it (jet) is only $4/yard at Jo-Ann Fabrics. You would need about 3 yards of it. I will post the link for it. It can also be worn again and again.
Now, if you make that dress, you still need the purple around the waist. Just buy .5 of a yard of something purple, and attach it to a gold ribbon that you can tie around your waist. Voila! You should also wear a couple of gold necklaces. I do suggest making the skirt longer. Instead of cutting out a circle for the skirt, cut two pieces that are wide enough to fit around your body, and sew them together down the sides. Then attach the bands to that, and you can always cut it shorter if you want to wear it again. Feel free to message me with any questions!

Nancy asks…

How to make clip-on earrings more comfortable?

I bought a pair of clip-on earrings on ebay for my gypsy costume. Unfortunately, the clip is so tight, I can barely wear them for five minutes. Is there anything I can do to make them less pinchy? Any help is appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    for a young girl.....?
In the PAST she has ALREADY dressed up as:
a flower child, Rainbow Brite, a fairy, , , Gypsy Girl, Punky Lil Pirate, and a Lil Red Devil.....
I know that it's a lil early to be worrying about this such thing but I am currently 8 months pregnant and my baby is due in early October. I have a 9 year old daughter and I was wondering if anyone could give me any costume ideas. Every site I go on I cannot seem to find anything appropriate for her age. She would have to have a size 14/16 or an XL in children's and there is never nothing in her size and the tween/teen costumes are so trashy looking. I just know that I will be so busy tending to a new baby that I wont have much free time to costume shop for her and this is why I am going to try to get this ordered asap. If anyone has any suggestions or websites please feel free to help me out. I just cannot get over how slutty looking all these costumes are turning into!!!!!!!!!!

    • ANSWER:
I know, right? When shopping for myself I couldn't believe the tween costumes either. Kids are growing up too fast.

You could always peruse a thrift store for ideas. If you found a black dress she liked, you could always get black lace and she could be a gothic bride. One of the cutest outfits I ever saw was a storm cloud. The child was covered in white balloons with silver tinsel attached at the bottom - and she carried a cardboard lightening bolt.

I'm not sure about ordering stuff online, I usually make my own costumes.

Gypsy Costume At Home

March 10, 2011

gypsy this was gypsy s halloween costume for last year my house looked ...

Thunder Bay, Ontario: A Tale of Two Cities

Once known as Fort William and Port Arthur, Thunder Bay united these two towns in 1970. Situated on Lake Superior and the Kaministiquia River it supports a population of 123,000. The city has become the melting pot to many cultures and nationalities: Scandinavian, French, English, First Nations, etc.

Thunder Bay and its environs boast many unique sites to visit. The views of Lake Superior and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park across the bay are breath taking from both Marina Park and Hillcrest Park.

Not to be missed is Fort William Historic Park on the South part of town. Even though not on the original site (presently the CN Railroad switching yards), the fort is a reconstruction of the Northwest Fur Company's distribution center and regional headquarters from 1803-1821. Consisting of forty-two reconstructed buildings, the fort demonstrates the wealth and power of this company at that time. Plan to spend a day there reliving 1815 with the many actors in historical costume. Visit the birch bark canoe builder, the cooper, blacksmith, tinsmith, tailor, carpenter, doctor, and the working farm with its variety of livestock. The re-enactors interact with each other and with the visitors.
Also in that area is Chippewa Park. This is located on the bay and has camping and other facilities. A small amusement park thrills children of all ages with a small roller coaster, carousal, tilt-awhirl, and other kiddy rides. Just down the road is a Wildlife Park with local animals as its focus: black bear, wolves, caribou, fox, lynx, and of course moose. Canada has the largest moose population of any country. Driving at night can be very hazardous to a person's body, if you meet one on the road.

Continuing South on Highway 61 you will come to the Founders' Museum and Pioneer Museum. This is a small gem of a museum with objects collected over the years. The museum is open during the summer months and the friendly staff wears period costumes. The museum also has old farming implements outside.

A little further is Thunder Oak Cheese Farm on Boundary Drive a mile from Highway 61. Owned and operated by a Dutch family, you can get your fill of Gouda Cheese in many different flavors: garlic, smoked, basil, etc.

West of the city on the Trans Canadian Highway is Kakabeka Falls; the second tallest one in Ontario Province, plunging 131 feet. Trails lead to the bottom of the falls and to the top. Think of the voyageurs of yesteryear carrying their packs as you climb around the falls. The Park offers camping and other amenities.

If you like amethysts, head Northeast of the city about thirty kilometers. There you will find open pit amethyst mines where you can dig for your own gems. The most advertised one is Panorama Mine, which charges an admission. A short distance further is Blue Points Mine at Road #5 North in Pearl, ON, where you can dig 'til you drop.

I you are still looking for adventure, you will find it a few kilometers further East down the highway. Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park and Eagle Canyon Park and Campgrounds offer beautiful views. Ouimet Canyon features plant life on the floor, which you would have to visit the Arctic Circle to view. The canyon extends for about two miles, is five hundred feet across and three hundred and fifty feet deep.. There is not any route to the bottom of the dry canyon to protect the fragile vegetation. Eagle Canyon, however, has two suspension bridges over its 200 feet plus deep canyon and a stairway that will take you to the floor of the canyon.

My boyfriend and I want to do a "couples" thing for Halloween but I don't know what would go good with my costume. I've tried looking for male Gypsy Costumes and they don't sell them anywhere. Can someone give me an example of what a male Gypsy would dress like? Maybe I can pull a costume together at home.

He doesn't HAVE to be a Gypsy so if anyone knows any good ideas that would at least go with the theme of my costume, let me know (:

    • ANSWER:
Downgraded pirate, (ruffle shirt, vest, baggy pants, skullcap), that could apss up as a gypsie) for oldtime gypsie.
Modernday, straight black pants with cloth as a belt, white shirt, black vest, black hat.

If you would like, you could go wench instead and boyfriend to go as a pirate, as wench does not differ much from a gypsie.

    • ANSWER:
I'm sure you have a bandana laying around, right? Just tie your hair down in it. Don't try putting your hair in a ponytail or anything, just take the bandana, wrap it around the top of your head and tie it at the back on top of your hair, at your neckline, then leave your hair loose. That's the best way I can think of. Good luck.

Gypsy Costumes For Men

gypsy my costume for halloween this year minus the garish black wig

A short history of burlesque from 1840 to today

In the 1940s with the clear distinction and between the upper and lower classes, burlesque was a form of low level theatre with comedy sketches and dance routines that often parodied the upper classes and their forms of entertainment such as opera. The current take on burlesque, that of the striptease, or at least showing of more flesh than is seen on the streets didn't come to the theatres until the late 1800s.

Lydia Thompson, "music-hall darling" of the UK started a burlesque troupe called The British Blondes which caused a scandal in the UK and, in an era when all flesh had to be covered, sold plenty of tickets! The scandal of their costumes was that they wore flesh-coloured tights for the stage which gave the impression of naked flesh.

Lydia Thompson's troupe is credited for the development of burlesque in the US. The British Blondes arrived in New York in September 1868 to an eager audience. Their popularity, and the scandal, preceded them and burlesque in the US flourished. But it was not just about showing flesh, it was an evening's entertainment that featured comedy routines and song and dance as well as the titillating shows.

While England and the US were scandalised by tights, burlesque was huge in Paris in the late 1800s with the famous Folies Bergere and the Moulin Rouge which made so many showgirls famous and produced so many beautiful colourful can-can costumes.

I love this description of Paris at the time by Henry James: "a massive flower of national decadence, the biggest temple ever built to material joys and the lust of the eyes ..."

And the showgirls of the time really were famous, not just in an underground way. Minstinguett apparently spent time with Oscar Wilde and Jean Cocteau as well as being romantically linked to the King of Spain, and Prince Orloff of Russia.

Many of the burlesque stories of these showgirls are fabulous PR stories. Misstinguett, known as Miss, admitted that she was not a great beauty but that she generated the 'loveliest legs in the world' description herself.

1900 to 1930 were the golden years of burlesque in the US. But while burlesque was rising in popularity, the general public was still in the petticoated and buttoned up fashion of the time. But in the 1920s things started to change. Skirt hems were rising, showing first the ankle, then the calf and by 1930 they were nearly showing knees! In America, along with prohibition, they introduced laws restricting skirt lengths.

Meantime in Downtown New York the speakeasies were doing a roaring trade and the art of the striptease developed. They still had to be very careful not to show too much skin or be "bawdy" onstage but there was usually a huge difference between the touted shows and what happened when the police weren't present. The famous Minsky's theatre downtown is where burlesque got its real start and business was so brisk that Billy Minsky opened two more theatres uptown. He was responsible for promoting the career of Gypsy Rose Lee. On 12 February 1931, Gypsy Rose Lee made her debut on Broadway and was the biggest sensation burlesque had ever seen.

Then in the 1940s television brought the glamour to people's homes. Betty Grable, singer, dancer and the symbol of Second World War glamour starred in Pin Up Girl and the idea of the pin-up was born.

With the end of the Second World War however the live art of burlesque was back. The new acts' major influences were movies and stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot. The hourglass figure was firmly in fashion as was "big hair" and the corset. As with burlesquers before her, Marilyn Monroe was a "created" beauty and her fame is not attributed to her beauty alone but to her character, style and overt sexiness.

The 1950s burlesquers also created themselves with their own look, their own act and their own props. Their names as well as their acts were over the top - Rosita Royce had a fly-away bikini of trained pigeons as her trademark; Evangeline the Oyster Girl would appear from a giant shell and Lili St Cyr had a transparent bathtub made for her stage performances.

Burlesque is still alive and well today with big names and big personalities such as Dita Von Tees and Immodesty Blaize. It has also taken off amongst the general public. If you haven't been to a burlesque show I highly recommend it. There are plenty of clubs and venues that offer shows and the chance to dress up in a fabulous burlesque costume yourself.

  3. QUESTION:
Looking for an old book title?
It is an older (15-20 years old) Harlequin or something like that book. It is a romance book. Set in a house by a small lake, a young lady or girl taken in by a gypsy name Esmeralda who I think dies and leaves the girl her old costume jewelry which turns out to be real. The lady rescues a large stray dog and somehow falls in love with a wealthy man. I have searched for this book for years - haven't seen it since high school. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
here is the harlequin site which holds all of the novels written.

  4. QUESTION:
    , what should I do?
I am from an important, well-off family, married, with children. Recently doctors diagnosed me as suffering from mental illness, and besides usual things (medicines, counseling), prescribed me to be more social, attending public event and such like. My wife Isabeau decided then to organize a party for one of her employees, who was getting married. Everybody was invited, and it is to be a costume party. Only masked people, dressed in masquerade costumes, are allowed to attend. I thought about the matter, and decided that simple dominos, and all these pirates and gypsies are too common. I hit on a wonderful idea - to dress like a woodwose. You know, these savage men who live in the woods, hairy all over, with a club. I do not want to go on my own, and think about dressing five other friends in the same costume. I even designed it already: linen cloth sewn onto our bodies and soaked in resinous wax to hold a covering of frazzled hemp, so that we appear shaggy and hairy from head to foot. We are to chain ourselves to each other, and dance like this, and it will look good and be fun. Or maybe I should go for a more conventional dress? What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
You are so eccentric! I love the idea.... go for it.... as long as you feel comfortable and have a good time then who cares!
